Elizabeth II (1990–2002)

The third version of the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was unveiled in 1990, when Her Majesty was 64 years old. It was the first effigy designed by a Canadian artist—specifically, Dora de Pédery-Hunt. It is surrounded by the Latin inscription ELIZABETH II D G REGINA.

Bluenose Ship

This reverse design was introduced in 1937. As stated in the official proclamation, it depicts a sailing fishing schooner. However, proud Nova Scotians—believing the ship represented the famous fishing and racing schooner named "Bluenose"—continued to lobby for official recognition. It was not until the spring of 2002 that the design was officially recognized as the Bluenose. According to available information, the designer, Emanuel Hahn, used this famous ship as his primary model. The initial master tools for the reverse were produced by the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint). To resist premature wear, larger-sized numerals were introduced in 1938.
